history

1955 Beginning of HSA-CT

Founded in 1955, the Connecticut Unit was established by local members of The Herb Society of America (HSA) who wanted to enjoy their monthly meetings without the challenges of winter travel to Boston and New York. From its inception, the Connecticut Unit has thrived, growing into a vibrant and energetic group.

Today, we proudly boast sixty active members, along with associate members and supporters from out of state. Our members include esteemed writers, teachers, designers, and horticulturists, many of whom are recognized for their leadership and contributions to herb gardening within the HSA community.

Continuing Our Mission of Herb Education and Enjoyment

In furtherance of our mission to promote the knowledge, use, and delight of herbs, the Connecticut Unit proudly maintains the Herb Garden at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, CT. We sponsor the annual Brinley Lecture and run an educational program at the York Correctional Institution, teaching incarcerated women about herbs, their culinary uses, and gardening. Each year, we also host a highly popular herb symposium at Elizabeth Park.

The Connecticut Unit is a tax-exempt charitable organization dedicated to fostering a love and understanding of herbs.

Our Mission

Cultivating Passion: The Mission and Leadership of the Connecticut Unit

Mission

The Connecticut Unit of The Herb Society of America is dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experiences of the members with the community.

Programs

The Connecticut Unit is actively engaged in various charitable activities and programs that emphasize the cultivation of herbs and the exploration of their historical and modern-day uses.

Our outreach efforts include educational tours of the Herb Garden at Elizabeth Park, a spring lecture, an herb plant sale, and an annual herb symposium. Proceeds from the sale of plants, hand crafted herbal items, and herbal delights at our annual symposium support the Connecticut Unit’s programs and the maintenance of the Herb Garden at Elizabeth Park.

Leadership

Leading our initiative to cultivate, study, and appreciate herbs is our dedicated leadership team:
