About Us

The Connecticut Unit
of The Herb Society of America

The Connecticut Unit of The Herb Society of Ameria (the Connecticut Unit) was conceived in 1955 when members of The Herb Society of America (HSA) residing in Connecticut found the travel to Boston and New York during the winter prevented their full enjoyment of monthly meetings.  We became an official autonomous unit of HSA that same year.

The energetic group of founders expanded quickly and today the Connecticut Unit has sixty active members, as well as associate members and longtime supporters who reside out of state.  We are fortunate to have members who are widely recognized for their contributions to herb gardening as writers, teachers, designers, and horticulturists.  Many have earned distinction for their leadership positions in HSA.

In furtherance of its mission to promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs, the Connecticut Unit maintains the Herb Garden at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford CT, sponsors the annual Brinley Lecture, and runs a program at the York Correctional Institution which educates incarcerated women about herbs, their culinary uses and gardening.  Eash year we host a very popular herb symposium in Elizabeth Park.

The Connecticut Unit is a tax-exempt charitable organization.

Mission

The Connecticut Unit of The American Herb Society is dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experiences of the members with the community.

Programs

The Connecticut Unit is involved in many activities and programs that focus on the cultivation of herbs and the study of their history and uses, both past and present.

Our outreach programs include educational tours of the Herb Garden in Elizabeth Park, a spring lecture, herb plant sale, and annual fall symposium.  Proceeds from the sale of the plants, handicrafts and herbal delights at our annual herb symposium support the Connecticut Unit’s educational programs and the maintenance of the Herb Garden in Elizabeth Park.
